Livable Streets Zone 7
Fairpark
We’re hosting a public design review, Wednesday, January 10th at Backman Elementary from 6 to 7 PM. Your feedback on the initial design concept will help us finalize the neighborhood traffic calming plan in Zone 7. Can’t make the meeting? Take the Livable Streets survey.
Project Overview
In 2023, the Livable Streets team will implement traffic calming in zone 7 of the Livable Streets program. Our goal is to improve the safety, livability, and attractiveness of the streets in the Fairpark neighborhood.

Please note that only the streets marked in yellow are candidates for traffic calming under the Livable Streets program.
We would love to hear from you! Please take a moment to take the Livable Streets Survey to provide valuable input on the trouble areas within the zone and the future street design in your neighborhood!

Neighborhood Meetings
We are holding public meetings to gather input from the neighborhood on how to best address the traffic safety issues in the area. The following are past meetings in chronological order starting at the most recent.
Neighborhood Meeting - November 8, 2023
Wednesday, November 8th, 2023 at Backman Elementary
Feedback was provided by the meeting attendees and some trends and common issues were highlighted. Below is a summary of the key takeaways:
- On-street parking was the most concerning issue around traffic calming in the area. Removal of parallel parking for bulb-outs and 45 degree angle parking was of particular concern.
- Excessive speeding due to cut-through commuter traffic from arterials is concerning along 300 North, 500 North, 1100 West, and 1200 West. Congestion is overflowing into the neighborhood and creating unsafe roadway conditions.
- Semi-truck routes through the neighborhood for CDL training cause congestion, noise, and potential safety issues along 400 North, 1100 West, and other local streets. Commercial drivers tend to ignore posted truck routes and cut-through on undesignated routes. Truck route realignment seems to be a potential solution to these issues, with flexibility for events at the State Fairpark.
- Keeping the streets in the area wide is desirable to some residents, while others would like to see some form of roadway narrowing.
- The recently installed traffic circle on 1200 West and 500 North has brought some controversy to the area. Residents appreciate the attempt to address cut-through traffic and excessive speeding along that stretch of 500 North, but find the traffic circle ineffective and liability to the safety of roadway users in the area. It is seen as too large and an obstruction to visibility, especially on the northeast corner of the intersection.
- Regular enforcement of traffic laws is seen as a potential solution to the speed problems in the area.
Virtual Open House - December 7, 2023
Wednesday, December 7th, 2023
Feedback was provided by the meeting attendees and some trends and common issues were highlighted. Below is a summary of the key takeaways:
- 300 North experiences excessive speeds due to drag racing and lack of narrowing. Safety for pedestrians and cyclists is a priority for this street because of the community assets along it.
- 1200 West is a safety issue when it intersects with all other east-west roads in the zone. Compliance with traffic control, especially stop signs is leading cause of incidents along the street.
- Pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements are desirable at the intersections of 1000 West and 300 North and 1000 West and 400 North.
- Speed is a constant issue along 1000 West and spills over into the neighborhoods around it.
