Italian American Heritage Month

The Council and Mayor Mendenhall recognized October as Italian-American Heritage Month in Salt Lake City. 


Votes  

The Council approved the following items during the formal meeting: 

  • Reallocating U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) HOME-ARP funds to provide additional assistance to households. 
  • Support for Rich’s Burgers N Grub from the Economic Development Loan Fund (EDLF). As discussed in the briefing, the loan would help create two to four new jobs in the next year and retain eight current jobs.   
  • The 2025 Salt Lake County Hazard Mitigation Plan, which identifies projects to help the city prevent further damage and respond quickly in case of emergencies.
  • The Salt Lake Central Housing and Transit Reinvestment Zone (HTRZ) Interlocal Agreement to authorize the sharing of tax increment between Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake City Community Reinvestment Agency (CRA). The State code requires the City and CRA to enter an interlocal agreement to release funds to the project area.
  • A request to vacate a portion of 1100 West near 400 South to facilitate a residential construction project. The request to vacate the 400 South side of the property was denied. 

Public Hearings Held  

Budget Amendment No. 2 
After receiving a briefing during the work session, the Council accepted public comment on Budget Amendment No. 2. The amendment includes mostly “carryover funds” for contracts started last fiscal year, in addition to funding for YouthCity afterschool programs, the expansion of the Trainfo system, grant funding to support victims of violent crimes and more. The Council adopted part of the amendment during their formal meeting, including relief for federal workers, and deferred the remaining items to a future meeting.

The Council provided public input opportunities for the following items: 

  • The Pax Station Apartment project, a 272-unit affordable housing project at 203 West Paxton Avenue.
  • A series of grant applications, including funds for improvements to the Jordan River and public transit. 
    The 2026-2027 U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) General Community Development Needs.
  • Clarifying that certain uses – such as heavy manufacturing, salvage yards, etc., are prohibited near all residential housing districts. The Council approved this item during the formal meeting. 
  • Exemptions for utility buildings from select design standards to allow for their installation in historic districts. The Council will continue this hearing at a later date once additional information is received.
  • Closing portions of the public right-of-way at approximately 6500 West Interstate 80 Eastbound Freeway for future railroad-related uses. The Council approved this item following the hearing.

The Council meets first as the Community Reinvestment Agency (C.R.A.) at 2 p.m., followed by the Council’s work session. The formal meeting begins at 7 p.m. and ends upon the conclusion of items listed on the agenda.
