SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 7, 2025 – The Salt Lake City Council has appointed Chris Wharton as the 2025 Council Chair and Alejandro “Ale” Puy as Vice Chair, ushering in a new phase of the city’s leadership. These positions are selected annually and play a crucial role in shaping policies, promoting transparency, and fostering engagement with residents, stakeholders, and city departments.
Council Member Wharton, who represents District 3, returns to Council leadership, having previously served as Chair in 2020 and Vice Chair in 2018, 2021 and 2024.
“I am honored to serve as Chair once again,” said Council Member Wharton. “I am eager to work with my peers and our community to ensure Salt Lake City remains a thriving, inclusive and forward-thinking city with our constituents at the heart of every decision we make.”
Council Member Puy, who represents District 2, steps into Council leadership for the first time after two years as RDA Board Chair, bringing a strong commitment to Westside investment and community engagement.
“I am excited to collaborate with Chair Wharton and my Council colleagues as we continue our work to enhance the quality of life for all Salt Lake City residents,” said Council Member Puy. “Our city’s future is bright, and I look forward to contributing to meaningful and impactful solutions for our community.
As Chair and Vice Chair, Wharton and Puy will steer the Council’s legislative priorities, set meeting agendas, sign official documents and represent the Council in public and policy discussions. In their Council capacity, they also oversee the management of the City Council Office.
In addition to appointing the Chair and Vice Chair, the Council also selects the leadership of the Community Reinvestment Agency (CRA) Board. Board leadership, which plays a key role in shaping the city’s development strategies, will be determined on Jan. 21.
