Update on the Main Street Fire

Main street fire employee assistance fund.

Salt Lake City Fire Chief Karl Lieb updated the Council on the Aug. 11 fire that impacted several Main Street businesses.

  • Firefighters responded to a fire in London Belle’s kitchen at about 8:40 p.m. 
  • All customers and employees were safely evacuated from the affected businesses.
  • 78 firefighters battled the fire, with three suffering minor injuries.

Salt Lake City has partnered with Downtown SLC to launch the Main Street Fire Employee Assistance Fund. The fund will directly support displaced employees, helping them cover essential expenses during this difficult time.

Council Votes 

The Council approved the following items during the formal meeting: 

  • A new civil enforcement tool to address loud and disruptive parties in neighborhoods. Non-sworn officers will respond to these calls, allowing police officers to focus on higher priority calls and encouraging property owners to mitigate tenant behavior.’
  • Updating the Communication Budget section of the Council Policy Manual.
  • A 6-month extension to allow the property owner at 2157 South Lincoln Street to meet the requirements for a rezone.
  • Amendments to parking regulations in the Downtown and Gateway zoning districts to improve design while meeting the need for parking.
  • The appointment of Heidi Alder as a Disciplinary Appeals Hearing Officer.

The Council provided public input opportunities for the following items: 

  • Ordinance: Design Review Standards Amendment
  • Ordinance: Amendment of Chapter 11.14 Parties, Gatherings, or Events

Council Work Session Briefings 

The Council continued their discussions of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which involves the construction, purchase or renovation of buildings, parks, streets or other City-owned infrastructure. The Council approves overall CIP funding in June with the annual budget and allocates project-specific funding by Sept. 1 of the same calendar year.

The Council was also briefed on the following items: 

  • The Safe Streets Action Plan (Vision Zero), a citywide initiative to reach zero traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2035. (Watch
  • Updating the general administrative hearing process for civil violations. (Watch
  • Potentially adding the City of Holladay as a member of the Central Wasatch Commission. (Watch)

Updates from the Administration  

Community Engagement:  

Salt Lake City believes public input is essential to making the right decisions for our city. Visit the City’s website for a list of projects currently collecting feedback.

Mayor’s Community Office Hours:  

The Mayor’s team of community liaisons is available to constituents to discuss community needs and receive feedback.

Homelessness: 

Homeless Resource Centers saw a 96.1% occupancy rate from Aug. 4 – 8.

Next Meeting 

Tuesday, Aug. 19

The Council’s work session begins 2 p.m. and ends at approximately 5:30 p.m. 
The Formal Meeting will be held at 6 p.m. to accommodate the 7 p.m. Truth in Taxation hearing.

After the hearing, the Council will adopt the final rate of tax levy for the City and City Library budgets, formally completing the FY26 budget process.

Council staff can provide parking validations for the City Library.
