Bonneville Blvd Trailhead Grand Opening

Wednesday, May 28, 2025, 9:00-9:30am

Salt Lake City is pleased to announce the opening of a new trailhead at Bonneville Boulevard. The Bonneville Boulevard Trailhead is one of four new trailheads opening in 2025. The other three trailheads are Popperton Park, Victory Road, and Emigration Canyon. Trailheads offer welcoming spaces for the community to gather before and after a trail outing and are the gateway to the Foothills.

The Bonneville Blvd Trailhead is part of the Foothills Trailhead Infrastructure Project.

Trail Connectivity from Bonneville Blvd.

Bonneville Blvd. Trailhead is located in the North Foothills, and provides a strategic connection point for West City Creek (Ensign Peak and connections to Davis County), Lower City Creek (Memory Grove and the Freedom Trail), and the Upper Avenues (BST Valleyview and connections to the Central Foothills) area of the Foothills.

Learn More About the Bonneville Blvd Trailhead

How did Public Lands select this location?

The “Salt Dome” area was an underutilized space located just above City Creek Canyon. The area is heavily used by the public who use Bonneville Blvd to access other trails and City Creek Canyon. The area has stunning views of the Capitol and the valley to the south, and City Creek Canyon to the north. The location between trails, existing infrastructure, and size make the area a perfect location for a new Foothills trailhead.

What amenities will the trailhead offer?

Bonneville Blvd Trailhead will have an ADA-accessible portable restroom, abundant parking, a wayfinding kiosk, a native plant garden, SLC Arts Council-designed bike racks, a bike repair station, picnic tables, benches, and more.

How will this trailhead benefit the community?

Improving trailhead infrastructure in the Foothills was identified as a priority for the public during the engagement process for the 2020 Foothills Plan. Survey responders indicated they wanted better access to the Foothills Natural Area and improved amenities like benches, parking, and restrooms. By providing these desired amenities, we are able to welcome new and returning visitors to the Foothills and improve the overall user experience.

Artist-Designed Bike Rack Murals

The Bonneville Trailhead will also include six artist-designed bike rack installations painted by local artists Xander Brickey, Eric Fairclough, Valerie Jar, Bill Louis, Caro Nilsson, and Brooklyn Ottens. A collaboration between the Salt Lake City Arts Council’s Public Art Program and Public Lands, this art project provides a platform for emerging local artists while celebrating the ecological significance and cultural diversity of the Foothills – offering trail users a visually engaging experience. Four more bike rack murals will be placed at the Popperton Park Trailhead later this summer.

About Salt Lake City’s Foothills Natural Area

The Salt Lake City Foothills Natural Area (“The Foothills”) consists of approximately 6,000 acres of designated open space bordering the northern and eastern limits of Salt Lake City running from Davis County to Emigration to Parley’s Canyon. The Foothills are home to sagebrush grasslands, steep canyons, scrub-oak woodlands, local flora and fauna, and an abundance of recreation. Historically, trails throughout the Foothills have been largely unplanned or unmanaged, except for the construction of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. The Salt Lake City Public Lands Department proposed a vision for sustainable recreation in the Foothills Natural Area which produced the 2020 Salt Lake City Foothills Trail System Plan.
