Overview
The Transportation Division developed a traffic calming plan, or a way to slow automobile traffic, for the west Sugar House neighborhood from 2100 South to 2700 South and from 500 East to 700 East. The constituent-requested CIP project for traffic calming in this neighborhood was submitted by residents and approved for funding by the Salt Lake City Council. The project had two components:
1) A neighborhood-wide traffic calming plan to address vehicle speeding and excessive cut-through issues in the West Sugar House neighborhood
2) Improvements to the 600 East Neighborhood Byway
Design
Traffic calming for the neighborhood was designed based on traffic data, results of the neighborhood survey, and project budget. The final design included:
Five speed cushions on 600 East
Five speed cushions were installed between 2100 South and 2700 South. Speed cushions are speed humps with cut-outs that allow emergency vehicles to pass through more easily. The City worked closely with the Salt Lake City Fire Department on the design of the speed cushions. Bicycles can also use the cut-outs to avoid the speed humps. Learn more about speed cushions here.
Five to eight speed humps on east/west streets
Five speed humps were constructed – one each on Simpson Avenue, Warnock Avenue, Commonwealth Avenue, Elm Avenue, and Wilmington Avenue. Up to three additional speed humps may be constructed if construction costs allow. The additional humps would be constructed on Stringham Avenue, Driggs Avenue, and Wilmington Avenue.
