Improving our city, neighborhoods, parks

SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 15, 2023 – The Salt Lake City Council voted to adopt nearly $40 million in project-specific funding for the City’s annual Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget. The Council funded 26 CIP projects recommended by Mayor Erin Mendenhall and the Capital Improvements Project Advisory Board and an additional seven projects with extra funding—$1.2 million—allocated in the FY2023-24 City Budget.

“We were fortunate to allocate an extra $1.2 million to CIP in this year’s annual budget,” said Council Member Darin Mano. “This allowed us to approve all projects recommended by the Mayor and critical projects selected by Council Members. Traffic calming stood out as a key priority among Council Members and these projects will facilitate the implementation of data-driven traffic calming measures across the City.”

The seven additional projects include one project per district viewed as “high priority” by Council Members.

In simple terms, the Capital Improvement Program is the City’s annual construction budget for projects of all types on public property. A total of 33 projects and programs received funding, ranging from targeted road safety improvements to park enhancements and many more.

“CIP gives us the opportunity to highlight and address often overlooked community needs at the direction of our neighbors,” said Councilwoman Victoria Petro. “This annual funding helps us pay special attention to community assets like parks, public art, lighting, trails and more. I’m grateful to my Council colleagues for prioritizing these investments.”
