PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on July 26, 1990, the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) established a significant moment in our history by ensuring the civil rights of citizens with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, without the collective efforts and resiliency of civil rights activists and disability rights supporters, pivotal precursor movements, such as the 504 Sit-Ins, could not have occurred to influence ADA legislation; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City affirms the principals of equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities as set forth for the State of Utah and as embodied in the ADA, the laws of the State of Utah and ordinances of Salt Lake City; and
WHEREAS, numerous organizations in Salt Lake City work with constituents and communities to bring forth the promise of hope and freedom that is envisioned by the passage of the ADA; and
WHEREAS, July 26, 2021 celebrates the 31st Anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act with a communal Disability PRIDE event; and
WHEREAS, Salt Lake City does hereby extend greetings and best wishes to all observing July 26, 2021 as Americans with Disabilities Act Awareness Day.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, proclaim July 26, 2021 as:
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Awareness Day in Salt Lake City
