Salt Lake City declares state of emergency to help westside residents after flooding

Oct. 7, 2025

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall declared a local emergency on Monday evening following the severe weekend storms that flooded the Rose Park area and impacted more than two dozen homes.

Between Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4, approximately two and a half inches of rain fell in just 14 hours. According to National Weather Service reports, this was the most rainfall recorded in a single day in Salt Lake City in more than 124 years. The severe weather event caused localized flooding and damage to public and private property in the Rose Park neighborhood near 2000 West and 800 North.

“By declaring a state of emergency, the City can access additional resources and move faster to support the families affected,” Mayor Mendenhall said. “It allows us to direct more city resources into cleanup, work hand-in-hand with the County and State, and open the door to financial assistance that could ease the burden for residents whose homes were damaged.”

The 30-day emergency order gives the City, Salt Lake County and others greater flexibility to request and provide aid, purchase needed materials, and coordinate across agencies. It also positions Salt Lake City and affected residents to seek state or federal recovery funds if they become available.

Impacted residents who have questions about resources available should contact Salt Lake City Emergency Management Captain Tom Simons at 801-251-6730.
