Salt Lake City invites residents and visitors to celebrate National Public Lands Day–the nation’s single largest day of celebration for public lands that provides an opportunity for people to connect with parks, trails, and natural areas.
Hosted by the Department of Public Lands, the community is invited to stroll or bike along the 9-Line Trail to explore an interactive story walk, complete the Public Lands Day Scavenger Hunt, sign up for volunteer opportunities, and learn how an $11.5 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund’s Greening America’s Cities initiative is supporting efforts to create greener, cooler spaces across Salt Lake City. The celebration will also include children’s activities, food trucks, live music, and more.
The event comes just months after the Bezos Earth Fund announced an 11.5 million grant to support improvements to the 9-Line and Fleet Block. Of the grant, $9.5 million will support improvements along 1.7 miles of the 9-Line, including the planting of 285 trees and 350 water-wise shrubs to add shade and improve the overall experience for residents. The remaining grant funds will allow the City to enhance the planned green space for the Fleet Block open space.
The Bezos Earth Fund’s Greening America’s Cities initiative works alongside communities to support the green spaces they want and need. Projects are shaped by local priorities and can include planting trees and expanding shade, creating or improving parks and trails, restoring natural areas, and reimagining underused spaces as welcoming places for people to gather and connect with nature.
The event is free and open to all ages.
