Project Overview
Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (SLCDPU) operates and maintains three major sewer trunklines that carry all wastewater from across the City to the treatment plant. This summer, SLCDPU rehabilitated its oldest sewer trunkline, which was originally installed in the 1890s.
Most of the work used trenchless construction methods by accessing existing manholes along Beck Street between 800 North and 1800 North. Approximately 1,500 feet of sewer main pipe was replaced using open excavation methods. This project was necessary to ensure safe and reliable sanitary sewer service and treatment for many years to come.
Project Wide Impacts:
- Construction and restoration work will usually take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Weekend and night work may take place as needed.
- Residents and businesses will be notified prior to any potential driveway impacts, road closures, or detours.
- Residents should expect increased noise, dust, and vibration during construction and restoration activities.
Ongoing Construction Impacts
800 North:
Starting the first week of August 2026, crews will begin to take down the temporary sewer bypass pumps on 800 North and remove the above-ground pipes that run from 800 North to 1200 North. This system kept the sewer in service during rehabilitation work throughout the summer. This effort is expected to take up to one month to complete.
This work includes landscape and asphalt restoration.
During bypass system removal:
- 800 North between 300 West and 400 West will be restricted to local traffic only.
- Business and residential driveways may be temporarily blocked to accommodate asphalt restoration.
- On-street parking on the north and south sides of 800 North will be limited to accommodate cleanup crews and equipment.

Timeline
Construction began in March 2026 and is expected to conclude by October 2026.

- February 2026: Began early community outreach
- March 18, 2026: Presented at the Capitol Hill Community Council meeting
- March – April 2026: Set up the sewer bypass system and began cleaning and documenting the sections of pipe to be lined
- May – Early July 2026: 24/7 CIPP lining operations from 800 North to 1800 North
- May – July 2026: Open trench operations on Beck Street to remove and replace existing manholes and approximately 1,500 feet of 150-year-old sewer pipe
- August – October 2026: Complete outstanding work items, remove temporary bypass pumps and pipeline, and project cleanup, including asphalt restoration work
