Project Overview
Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (SLCDPU) operates and maintains three major sewer trunklines that carry all wastewater from across the City to the treatment plant. SLCDPU has begun rehabilitating its oldest sewer trunkline, which was originally installed in the 1890s.
Most of the work will use trenchless construction methods and will take place at existing access manholes along Beck Street between 800 North and 1800 North. In some areas, the pipe will need to be replaced using open excavation. This project is necessary to ensure safe and reliable sanitary sewer service and treatment for many years to come.
Project Wide Impacts:
- Construction work will usually take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Weekend and night work may take place as needed. Adjacent residents will receive a notice at least 48 hours prior to any scheduled night work.
- Residents will be notified prior to any potential driveway impacts, road closures, or detours.
- We will always maintain at least one access point for each business. When needed, trenches may be covered with steel plates to allow vehicle access.
- Residents should expect increased noise, dust, and vibration during construction.
Will I experience disruptions to my sewer service?
To keep sewer service operating during construction, crews have installed a temporary bypass system. This bypass system redirects sewage flow around the section of pipe being repaired. Pumps and temporary above-ground pipes keep wastewater flowing and prevent service interruptions, sewer backups, and environmental impacts during repairs. The pipes will be removed and the asphalt restored once construction is complete.
While the bypass system is active, nearby residents and businesses may experience:
- Temporary changes in access for sidewalks, roads, or driveways
- Increased odors
- Increased noise from pumps powered by generators
Upcoming Work Activities
- Over the next week, crews will be cleaning up the work zone on Beck Street and prepping the area for paving.
- Paving along the open-cut trench section on Beck Street is scheduled for Saturday, July 18.
- The week of July 20, crews will install a new concrete curb in the median to replace what was removed during construction.
- The temporary sewer bypass system and above ground pipes will be taken down starting in early-August.
Ongoing Construction Impacts
800 North:
Through August 2026, 800 North between 300 West and 400 West will be restricted to local traffic only.
- On-street parking on the north and south sides of 800 North will be limited while the bypass system is in place.
- Garbage pick-up and mail delivery will not be interrupted during construction. If there are any changes in service, residents will be notified in advance.
1600 North:
1600 North is CLOSED at Beck Street to accommodate manhole installation and sewer pipe rehabilitation.
- Local traffic detours include Hot Springs Street to Everett Avenue, or Dexter Street to Duluth Avenue.
- 1600 North is expected to be paved and reopened on July 11, 2026.

Timeline

- March – April 2026: Set up the sewer bypass system and began cleaning and documenting the sections of pipe to be lined
- May – Early July 2026: 24/7 CIPP lining operations from 800 North to 1800 North
- May – June 2026: Open trench operations on Beck Street to remove and replace existing manholes and approximately 1,500 feet of 150-year-old sewer pipe
- July – October 2026: Complete outstanding work items, remove temporary bypass pumps and pipeline, and project cleanup, including asphalt restoration work
