If you had to guess which fixture in your home uses the most water, what would you pick? The shower? The washing machine?
Believe it or not, it’s the toilet, and by a wide margin. Toilets account for nearly a quarter of all indoor residential water use, making them one of the biggest opportunities for homeowners to conserve water.
That’s why Utahns have been replacing their old water-wasting toilets with new WaterSense models through the Utah Water Savers Toilet Replacement Program.
The results are adding up. So far, around 1,400 toilets have been replaced across our service area through the program.
That may not sound like a lot on its own. but together, those replacements are estimated to save 72 million gallons of water every year, that’s roughly the equivalent of 110 Olympic-sized swimming pools. And there’s still more water to be saved!
Many homes in the Salt Lake area were built before 1994, which means there are still older toilets in service. If you have one of them, now is the time to act. The Utah Water Savers Toilet Replacement Program ends November 1, 2026. Eligible residents can receive up to $150 per toilet, for up to two toilets per property.
The process is simple, check to see when your toilet was manufactured by looking on the underside of the tank lid or inside the tank, replace your old toilet with a WaterSense model, and apply for your rebate.
