Salt Lake City announces new Deputy Director of Community Services

November 19, 2021

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced the hiring of Tammy Hunsaker to fill the newly-created Deputy Director of Community Services position in the Department of Community and Neighborhoods (CAN).

Hunsaker comes to the department with a vast array of technical expertise, having worked in various positions in the City over the past eight years, most recently serving as the Deputy Director of Salt Lake City’s Redevelopment Agency (RDA). She started her tenure with the City on the Housing Stability team, formerly Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND), which she now oversees.

“Salt Lake City has been fortunate to have Tammy Hunsaker’s expertise and work ethic for eight years,” Mayor Mendenhall said. “She’s a natural fit for this new role.”

During her time with the RDA, Hunsaker was strategic in elevating the role of affordable housing within the RDA’s programming. Her efforts have resulted in the development of several affordable and mixed-income housing projects across the City as well as the implementation of the RDA’s Housing Development Loan Program, the City’s one-stop-shop for allocating funds for the development and preservation of affordable housing.

“Her combination of education and practical experience paired with her results-driven approach have allowed Tammy to find success here at the City and help meet the needs of City residents, and I look forward to seeing her bring that expertise and experience to bear on the challenges and opportunities before the City now,” said Blake Thomas, Director of the Department of Community and Neighborhoods.

In her role as Deputy Director of Community Services, Hunsaker will oversee the Housing Stability, Real Estate Services, and Youth and Family Services divisions. This diverse portfolio has a direct nexus on the lives of Salt Lake City residents, and her oversight will help facilitate increased collaboration between such critical services and resources.

“I look forward to joining a Department that is so tangibly involved in the lives of City residents,” said Hunsaker. “And I look forward to helping facilitate increased collaboration and innovation within the Department. I am excited to be part of a leadership team that is so committed to creating a more equitable and livable City.”
