Salt Lake City Leaders Celebrate Completion of First Growing Season at New Harrison Community Garden

August 25, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY – Today, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, along with several key partners, celebrated the completion of the new Harrison Community Garden. The garden is located at 700 E. Harrison Ave, just south of Liberty Park along 700 E.

As the latest addition to Salt Lake City’s Green City Growers program, the Harrison Garden is run by the non-profit Wasatch Community Gardens and provides plots for as many as 50 gardeners to grow vegetables. This is the eighth active garden in Salt Lake City boundaries created through this program, which is facilitated by the City identifying city-owned or managed parcels located on properties with access to a waterline and other conditions conducive to creating a successful and sustainable community garden.

Funding for the garden was obtained through the City’s Capital Improvement Program in 2021. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of passionate community members, City staff, Wasatch Community Gardens, and several volunteers, the garden took just a few months to construct. Most of the garden boxes are now full of vibrant vegetable and pollinator crops as the end of the garden’s first full growing season nears.

“Community gardens strengthen neighborhoods, they increase access to fresh, nutritious food, often in underserved areas, and they also enhance the water, air and land in the immediate vicinity,” Mayor Erin Mendenhall said. “This garden will continue to grow and flourish, thanks to the good work of its team of dedicated community members and our partners.”

Salt Lake City recognizes the important role community vegetable gardens play in supporting our local food system. Residents interested in renting a plot in their local community garden can contact Wasatch Community Gardens at 801-359-2658.
