Salt Lake City requests public feedback on conceptual design alternatives to transform Main Street (from South Temple to 400 South) into a people-oriented, worldwide destination. This vision builds upon past planning documents and the success of the Open Streets events, hosted in partnership with the Downtown Alliance. 

This study incorporates the lessons learned from past events and community feedback to shape design concepts that permanently transform Main Street into a world-class public space to gather, shop, dine, play, relax, attend events, and experience some of Salt Lake City’s premiere cultural spaces all year round.  

“Our vision for Main Street is about creating a walkable destination that brings people together, whether they connect over dinner and drinks, meet up for a concert, or go for a family outing,” said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “This will further the success we’ve seen in Downtown Salt Lake City and set us up for strong long-term economic health.”

Community feedback from the launch of the project gained through workshops, walking tours, a survey, and in-person conversations at the Downtown Farmer’s Market, indicates that downtown residents and Main Street visitors want to see more planting areas, improved dining, programmed events, spaces for play and performance, opportunities for public art and a community market (farmers’ market, winter holiday market, or craft fairs) on Main Street.

This study also explores potential futures for 100 South between West Temple and Main Street, allowing underutilized traffic lanes to transform into a new arrival for global visitors, support special events, and enhance outdoor dining and retail downtown.

This Friday, October 20 from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday, October 21, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. city staff and the project team will bring large-scale images of four potential concepts they’ve developed for Main Street based on that feedback. The public is encouraged to meet the team, review the concepts in person, and share their thoughts on what features should advance to a final recommendation.

Following the survey closure on October 31, the MainSLC.com website will provide project updates and information on the final concept, which is anticipated to be shared before the end of the year.
