Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced Brian Redd as her recommendation for the City’s next police chief for the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Salt Lake City requires decisive public safety leadership that shapes much more than the Salt Lake City Police Department—leadership that establishes safety, trust, communication, and transparency with our communities–but also the ability to lead on regional issues that play out in capital cities.

“As our city grows, policing must continue to evolve and become more responsive to the dynamic challenges in our community,” said Mayor Mendenhall. “So it’s critical we meet this moment with urgency and with leadership in our police department that’s rooted in a deep commitment to collaboration. I believe Brian Redd is that leader.”

Redd brings extensive law enforcement experience and strong collaborative leadership to Salt Lake City, which is beginning a new chapter in public safety to secure the city’s long-term well-being.

“I’m looking forward to supporting and serving with the great women and men of the Salt Lake City Police Department,” said Brian Redd. “I also look forward to serving the residents of this great city.”

“My goal is to come in and listen to all levels within the organization and our community members on how we can best serve. I will aim to use my established relationships in the criminal justice and social services systems to resolve the challenging intersection of crime, homelessness, mental health, and addiction while partnering with all levels of government and the private sector to ensure individuals are treated with dignity and humanity while ensuring a safe community for all,” Redd said.

Most recently, Redd served as the executive director of the Utah Department of Corrections. Before that appointment, he worked in Salt Lake City as vice president of Goldman Sachs’s Compliance Division. Prior to Goldman Sachs, he served for 21 years in the Utah Department of Public Safety, starting in patrol as a state trooper and ending as director for the State Bureau of Investigation and Statewide Information and Analysis Center in 2021.

Beyond his formal positions, Redd has also served on numerous advisory committees and boards, including the Utah Crime Victim Council, Utah Refugee Board of Advisors, Volunteers of America Utah, Utah Controlled Substances Advisory Committee, and as a strategic lead on 2020 police reform efforts involving law enforcement partners, social justice advocates, community members, and legislators to address racial disparities. He also established the first victim services program and co-responder team in the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Redd holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Utah State University and a master’s in public administration from Brigham Young University. He is also a graduate of Northwestern University’s Police Staff and Command School.

Following this recommendation for appointment, it’s anticipated that Redd will go before the City Council on March 4, 2025, for advice and consent.

Today’s announcement upholds the Mayor’s public commitment to announce an interim or replacement by or before March 1.
