Salt Lake City completes more than 100 road and infrastructure projects funded by voter-approved streets bond

Dec. 2, 2025

Improvements deliver smoother streets, safer travel, greater multi-modal connectivity greener neighborhoods, and upgraded utilities citywide

At the end of November, Salt Lake City finished 122 miles of street reconstruction projects and over 310 lane miles of pavement resurfacing, creating more reliable streets for all residents, no matter how they travel, as the city continues to grow. These upgrades were supported by the $87 million voter-approved streets bond.

These investments are already paying off. Thirty percent of the worst roads in the city were reconstructed since implementation of the 2018 Funding Our Future Bond. Now, more than half of City roads rate in the top three rating categories of Good, Satisfactory, and Fair condition.

Coordinated efforts between the City’s Transportation, Engineering, Streets, Public Utilities, and Public Lands divisions ensured that the work went beyond pavement replacement. City streets are now safer, greener, and more resilient. A recent study from the Utah Department of Transportation also found that despite population increase in the area east of I-15 growing by more than 30%, corresponding traffic only increased by about 15%.

Major projects like the reconstruction of 200 South, 300 West, and 2100 South and dozens of smaller, local street projects are improving daily life for residents, businesses, and visitors. And because repaving projects included underground utility upgrades, these roadways will not require major work again for many years.

“This is what local investment looks like in action,” said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “Salt Lake City residents put their trust in us to use these funds wisely, and the results speak for themselves: smoother streets, upgraded utilities, more trees, and stronger neighborhoods across the city.”

By the end of November 2025, the City completed 104 individual projects, representing upgrades both above and below the surface:

  • Rebuilt about 122 miles of worn-out roads
  • Resurfaced an additional 310 lane miles of pavement
  • Rebuilt nearly 60 miles of sidewalk, curb, and gutter
  • Upgraded over 15,200 feet of century-old water, storm drain and sewer mains
  • Added over 2,700 new trees and plants for shade and beauty
  • 70 new pedestrian signals, 11 new raised crosswalks and more than 24 miles of new bike lanes or shared paths.

“These projects show the value of working across departments to maximize public benefit,” said Mark Stephens, Salt Lake City Engineer. “When we rebuild a street, we’re not just laying asphalt—we’re modernizing utilities, improving safety, and planning for long-term sustainability.”

From major arterials to neighborhood streets, this street bond delivered visible, lasting benefits throughout Salt Lake City. Residents can see their tax dollars at work with smoother roads, safer crossings, and upgraded infrastructure that supports a growing city and a better quality of life.

About Funding Our Future
Approved by voters in 2018, the Funding Our Future bond provided $87 million to address Salt Lake City’s most urgent roadway needs. The City coordinated additional funds from Public Utilities and Public Lands to include utility replacements, stormwater improvements, and landscaping upgrades. Together, these investments make the city’s infrastructure more sustainable and ready for decades of use.
