Salt Lake City’s popular landscaping equipment exchange program opens

April 15, 2026

Spring arrived early this year and Salt Lakers are already busy with their yards. Just in time for the season, Salt Lake City’s Clean Air SLC landscaping equipment exchange program is now open.

Salt Lakers are invited to apply for money toward the purchase of electric landscaping equipment, such as electric lawnmowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and leaf vacuums. Applications open at noon, Wednesday, April 15, and will remain open until program funds have been disbursed.

“Helping clear the air in our homes and neighborhoods is of paramount importance to me. That’s why we’re bringing back another round of the spring landscaping equipment exchange, known as Clean Air SLC,” said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “We’ve helped our community swap out over 2,000 units since 2024. This year, Salt Lakers can continue to earn vouchers for electric lawnmowers and handheld tools to tackle those yard care chores with greater ease and less pollution.”

Voucher amounts vary based on whether a participant recycles a gas-powered piece of equipment or is making an electric purchase only. Recycling a mower earns a $295 voucher, while recycling a smaller handheld tool earns a $155 voucher. Participants not recycling gas-powered equipment can apply to receive a $145 voucher for a mower or $75 for a handheld tool.

Salt Lake City is partnering with the City Ace Hardware locations at 612 E. 400 South and 477 N. 300 West, as well as the Home Depot at 328 W. 2100 South. Residents will take their gas-powered equipment directly to the store to be recycled and then receive coupon codes to make purchases at those stores.

Electric options are much cleaner than gas-powered alternatives, helping to clear the air at the home and neighborhood-level, while reducing overall carbon and criteria pollution in our airshed.

Since its inception in Spring 2024, the Clean Air SLC landscaping equipment exchange program has helped retire 2,105 units of gas-powered equipment from our airshed, removing an estimated 6,800 pounds of pollutions annually. That’s the equivalent of taking 1,124 cars off the road!
