Steenblik Park, located at 1050 W. 800 North, is now open to the public following major revitalization. The project marks an important milestone for Salt Lake City’s Department of Public Lands as the first existing park to receive a full renovation through the Parks, Trails, and Open Space General Obligation (GO) Bond. 

In 2022, Salt Lake City voters overwhelmingly approved the $85 million GO Bond, demonstrating strong community support for investing in the City’s parks, trails, open spaces, and other public lands. Renovating existing parks was identified as one of the bond’s top priorities. 

“Longtime neighbors may remember Steenblik Park simply as the neighborhood ‘Tot Lot,’ a place shaped by Rose Park families and children,” said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. “More than 40 years later, it feels especially fitting that it is now the first City park fully reimagined through the GO Bond. We’re carrying its history forward and giving a new generation of families a place to make their own memories.”

Located in the Rose Park neighborhood, Steenblik Park is a .61-acre community park named after Joseph F. Steenblik, who was instrumental in the building of the Rose Park Library, Rose Park Gymnasium, and more. 

The park is best known for its iconic “Dairy Cats,” sculpted by local artist Day Christensen. The “Dairy Cats” were developed to commemorate Steenblik Dairy, a business that called the Rose Park neighborhood home for many years. The revitalization of the park builds on its existing character while creating a more welcoming space for residents of all ages. 

“We’re excited to see Steenblik Park open its doors to the community,” said Public Lands Deputy Director Tyler Murdock. “This project demonstrates what is possible when we invest in the parks and public spaces that already serve our neighborhoods. We’re proud to deliver a park that is more accessible and enjoyable for the Rose Park community, and we look forward to continuing this work across Salt Lake City.” 

The revitalization includes a variety of improvements designed to support recreation, play, and gathering including: 

• Updated playground equipment 
• Additional seating options 
• A new shade structure 
• Additional trees 
• Improved landscaping 

The improvements represent a significant investment in the Rose Park neighborhood and provide residents with an enhanced space to connect with one another. 

“I’m so glad my neighbors have an improved space for relaxing and recreating in our home neighborhood,” said City Council Member Victoria Petro. “This is a wonderful way for the city to care for the future of our community, while preserving the heritage of the Steenblik Dairy that started it all.” 

The Department of Public Lands has now completed three projects funded through the GO Bond, including Backman Open Space, Phase 1 of Glendale Regional Park, and the newly revitalized Steenblik Park. While Backman Open Space and Glendale Regional Park represent new park and open space investments, Steenblik Park is the first preexisting park to be fully reimagined through the bond. The project budget was $750,000 which included design, engagement, and construction. 

The completion of Steenblik Park is part of Salt Lake City’s continued dedication to neighborhood parks and public spaces through the GO Bond. As additional projects move forward, the City is working to ensure residents across Salt Lake City have access to safe places to enjoy the outdoors.  

With the revitalization now complete, Steenblik Park is ready to welcome the Rose Park community back to start making more memories.
