Mindfulness in the heart of Sugar House

Mindful Living Wellness Center, a Salt Lake City business, receives Economic Development Loan Fund

July 14, 2022

Salt Lakers with an interest in mindfulness and healing have a cozy place to find respite, thanks to Mindful Living Wellness Center. In April 2022, the Sugar House spa and yoga business received a $100,000 Economic Development Loan Fund (EDLF) loan from Salt Lake City.

Right before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Misty Beryle, owner and operator of Mindful Living, opened her business in an old home in the heart of Sugar House that she renovated back to its original 1912 style. Misty says housing her spa in the vintage building allows patrons to escape the world and leave their troubles behind.

“There is a lot of turmoil going on in the world,” she said. “But the ripple effect of helping one person at a time is real. We can be an influence for good with one person, who then is an influence for good within their realm, which then echoes outward into the community and the world.”

During the pandemic, Mindful Living used the EDLF loan from the City’s Department of Economic Development for working capital and to hire five employees.

Roberta Reichgelt, Director Business Development Division said, “We’ve been working with Misty and Mindful Living for more than a year, and we were happy to guide her through the EDLF process. We think the City will benefit from the work that was done with the EDLF and Mindful Living, and we’re grateful to the City Council members and the Mayor who made this possible.”

The EDLF’s purpose is to stimulate business development and expansion, create employment opportunities, encourage private investment, promote economic development, and enhance neighborhood vitality and commercial enterprise in Salt Lake City by making loans available to businesses. The program’s overarching goal is to invest in viable businesses that produce strong economic returns and also provide positive social and environmental impacts. Learn more here

“Businesses like Mindful Living serve an economy that in turn serves people and helps increase quality of life for residents,” said Lorena Riffo Jenson, Interim Director of Salt Lake City’s Department of Economic Development. “Being able to connect small businesses that repurpose treasured parts of the City with funds that then help the businesses serve the larger community is exactly why the EDLF exists. We know that businesses like Mindful Living sometimes need funding assistance, and we’re grateful we were able to serve.”
