Alicia De León was born in Los Angeles, California to parents who emigrated from Mexico and Central America. She was educated at the University of California, Los Angeles with a Master’s in Social Sciences and Comparative Education. She is a graduate fellow of the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) which is dedicated to advancing educational opportunities for the different regions of the Latinx/Hispanic communities. In 2009, Alicia moved to Salt Lake City to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Utah in the field of education. She has worked with nonprofit organizations that have served underrepresented communities on the West Side of Salt Lake City as a youth advocate. For the past eight years, Alicia also worked for the Salt Lake City School District as a Family-School Collaboration Specialist which focused on implementing student engagement initiatives that built capacity among educators and families to promote academic success.
