Project Overview
Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (SLCDPU) operates and maintains three major sewer trunklines that carry all wastewater from across the City to the treatment plant. SLCDPU has begun rehabilitating its oldest sewer trunkline, which was originally installed in the 1890s.
Most of the work will use trenchless construction methods and will take place at existing access manholes along Beck Street between 800 North and 1800 North. In some areas, the pipe will need to be replaced using open excavation. This project is necessary to ensure safe and reliable sanitary sewer service and treatment for many years to come.

Project Wide Impacts:
- Construction work will usually take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Weekend and night work may take place as needed. Adjacent residents will receive a notice at least 48 hours prior to any scheduled night work.
- Residents will be notified prior to any potential driveway impacts, road closures, or detours.
- We will always maintain at least one access point for each business. When needed, trenches may be covered with steel plates to allow vehicle access.
- Residents should expect increased noise, dust, and vibration during construction.
Will I experience disruptions to my sewer service?
To keep sewer service operating during construction, crews will install a temporary bypass system. This bypass system redirects sewage flow around the section of pipe being repaired. Pumps and temporary above-ground pipes will be used to keep wastewater flowing and prevent service interruptions, sewer backups, and environmental impacts during repairs.
While the bypass system is active, nearby residents and businesses may experience:
- Temporary changes in access for sidewalks, roads, or driveways
- Increased odors
- Increased noise from pumps powered by generators
Upcoming Lane Closures on Beck Street
On Tuesday, May 26, southbound Beck Street (US-89) will be reduced to one lane for approximately ten days.
- When: May 26 to June 3, day and night*
- Where: 1600 North to Victory Road
- What: Crews are replacing the existing sewer main pipe from Everett Avenue to Victory Road
Motorists can expect:
- Significant travel delays on weekdays, particularly during the morning commute between 7:00 – 10:00 a.m., take alternate routes
- Narrow lanes and changing traffic control, please slow down
- Limited left turns in and out of business accesses
After June 3, two lanes will remain open during the day in both directions on Beck Street as crews continue to replace the sewer main using traditional open-trench methods. This phase is expected to take up to three months to complete.
Other Upcoming Work Activities
- Crews are currently lining segments of the existing sewer pipe and accessing it from the manhole located at 1600 North and Beck Street. The lining rehabilitation work is expected to be completed by early-June 2026.
- Sewer lining is a 24/7 operation. Adjacent residents will receive a night-work notice prior to work beginning in their area.
- A bypass system will keep the sewer in service during rehabilitation work. The team will continue to monitor the bypass pumps and above-ground pipes through August 2026.
Detailed Construction Impacts
800 North:
Through August 2026, 800 North between 300 West and 400 West will be restricted to local traffic only.
- On-street parking on the north and south sides of 800 North will be limited while the bypass system is in place.
- Garbage pick-up and mail delivery will not be interrupted during construction. If there are any changes in service, residents will be notified in advance.

1600 North:
1600 North is CLOSED at Beck Street to accommodate manhole installation and sewer pipe rehabilitation.
- Local traffic detours include Hot Springs Street to Everett Avenue, or Dexter Street to Duluth Avenue.
- 1600 North is expected to open by mid-June.
Temporary Sewer Bypass Pipes:
To keep sewer service operating during construction, there is a temporary bypass system in place. This bypass system redirects sewage flow around the section of pipe being repaired.
There are two 24” bypass pipes running side-by-side from 800 North to 1500 North in the shoulder of the road. The pipe is buried as it crosses driveways and side streets to maintain local access during construction. The pipes will be removed and the asphalt restored once construction is complete.
