Mayor Biskupski, Council Member Charlie Luke, and UTA Board Chair Carlton Christensen will make a “toast to transit” at Salt Lake Central Station at 7:00 am on August 12th.
A new era for transit in Salt Lake City will begin on Sunday, August 11th, when the first phase of the City’s Transit Master Plan is officially implemented. In partnership with UTA and utilizing sales-tax revenue from the City’s Funding Our Future initiative, a new Frequent Transit Network (FTN) will begin operating along 200 South, 900 South, and 2100 South.
The initial phase will bring improved seven-day-a-week service to bus routes 2, 9, and 21. Monday-Saturday, during peak periods, service will arrive every 15 minutes. Sunday, early-morning and late-night service will be provided every 30 minutes. Three of the buses running on the 200 South corridor will be electric zero-emission buses contributing to the City’s goal to reduce carbon emissions 80% by 2040, and frequencies along this corridor will be as high as 7 minutes Monday-Saturday between Salt Lake Central Station and 1300 East.
“After years of planning, the City’s Transit Master Plan is finally becoming a reality on the streets of Salt Lake City,” said Mayor Jackie Biskupski. “These changes will improve the lives of thousands of people in our City, from the student who wants to stay at school for extracurricular activities to shift workers who need to get to their jobs earlier, later, and on Sunday. This is a game changer for Salt Lake City.”
The plan has been designed to form a transit grid to match the City’s street system, rather than the hub and spoke design that has served the region for many years. This use of Salt Lake City’s street grid will provide better connectivity throughout the City for more people, including a new connection between the City’s east and west side communities with an expanded route 9.
