Virtual Open House: A New 600/700 North Corridor

Salt Lake City’s 600/700 North Corridor, one of the city’s busiest and most important westside thoroughfares, will be the topic of a virtual open house on Thursday, June 18.

City traffic engineers will host the event via Facebook to talk about the 600/700 North Mobility, Safety and Transit Improvements Study. Residents are invited to comment on the project and share ideas.

Stretching from Interstate 15 to 2200 West, the corridor drives plenty of resident comment and concern about pedestrian safety, speeding, traffic, transit, neighborhood access and more.

Salt Lake City’s Transportation Division is working to address those challenges with a new plan for 600/700 North that increases safety and ease of use for all who rely on the road.

“The study will help the City identify road improvement opportunities and prioritize projects for the coming years,” said Kyle Cook, the project manager and a Transportation Division engineer.

It will also inform locations for new bus transit stops ahead of the Utah Transit Authority’s launch of a frequent transit service on 600/700 North in 2021.

“The idea is that we would have a coordinated plan – something that defines specific goals and projects that we can then phase in over time. It’s hard to know what funding resources to pursue when you aren’t clear about the implementation plan,” said Cook. “Our goal is to look at ways where we can calm traffic and make the corridor more inviting from a pedestrian perspective and address the concerns of residents and businesses along the street.”

Residents can livestream the 10 a.m. event here: www.Facebook.com/SLCGovernment.
Questions and comments can be posted in the chat window or emailed in advance to 600North@slcgov.com.

The public survey for the 600/700 North Mobility, Safety and Transit Improvements Study is open online through June 30. https://www.slc.gov/transportation/600north/.
