Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday alongside City Council Members and leaders from the Hispanic business community.
“Salt Lake City owes its vibrancy and energy to the people who live and work here and I’m so grateful to our strong Latino communities for all they contribute,” Mayor Mendenhall said. “It’s an honor to celebrate the tremendous ways our city’s Hispanic families, artists and businesses add to the beauty and culture of our capital city.”
Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 each year and recognizes the achievements and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Salt Lake City has a strong and growing Latino community with nearly 45,000 residents, making up nearly 22 percent of the City’s population. Watch the full event here https://youtu.be/0JWonAQhtvk

Suazo Business Center is a nonprofit committed to the economic development and empowerment of the Hispanic/Latino and other underserved communities. They provide training, advising, and resources to break cycles of poverty, build wealth, and promote self-reliance.
In the last five years, with support from Salt Lake City, the Suazo Business Center helped create 245 new businesses in the city, adding almost $40 million to Salt Lake City’s economy.
Friday’s event included a speech and reading of a proclamation by Mayor Mendenhall, a performance by Ballet Folklórico Eck, remarks by Edward Bennett, and City Council Members Victoria Petro-Eschler, Alejandro Puy and Ana Valdemoros.
