Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday alongside City Council Members and leaders from the Hispanic business community.

“Salt Lake City owes its vibrancy and energy to the people who live and work here and I’m so grateful to our strong Latino communities for all they contribute,” Mayor Mendenhall said. “It’s an honor to celebrate the tremendous ways our city’s Hispanic families, artists and businesses add to the beauty and culture of our capital city.”

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 each year and recognizes the achievements and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Salt Lake City has a strong and growing Latino community with nearly 45,000 residents, making up nearly 22 percent of the City’s population. Watch the full event here https://youtu.be/0JWonAQhtvk

“The Suazo Business Center is proud of our name, our history, and our heritage. If it were not for our community’s pillars, like Pete Suazo in the past and Silvia Castro in the present, then our Latino and Hispanic communities would not be where they are today,” says Edward Bennett, Suazo Business Center’s Director of Business Development.

“Council Members Valdemoros, Petro-Eschler, and Puy have not only continued the legacy of our city’s greatest, but they are revolutionizing the path forward for an entire generation of young, capable, and worthy Latinos and Latinas. The Center is grateful for all the tireless work the City does to represent all of their constituents, including those who have been historically overlooked.”

Suazo Business Center is a nonprofit committed to the economic development and empowerment of the Hispanic/Latino and other underserved communities.  They provide training, advising, and resources to break cycles of poverty, build wealth, and promote self-reliance.

In the last five years, with support from Salt Lake City, the Suazo Business Center helped create 245 new businesses in the city, adding almost $40 million to Salt Lake City’s economy.

Friday’s event included a speech and reading of a proclamation by Mayor Mendenhall, a performance by Ballet Folklórico Eck, remarks by Edward Bennett, and City Council Members Victoria Petro-Eschler, Alejandro Puy and Ana Valdemoros.
