Mayor’s June newsletter

Dear Salt Lakers

Dear Salt Lakers,

After a month filled with wildfires in the Foothills, I know many of us are feeling anxious about the hot summer ahead, our continued drought, and our air quality. Before I recap June, I want to outline what you can do to stay safe and help.

Fireworks Use Ban

Fires have been on all of our minds with the current drought conditions and the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, which is why I urged Governor Cox to look at additional fireworks restrictions. I’m so thankful for his decision to restrict fireworks use across the state.

Drone Show
From July 2–5, personal fireworks use of any kind is not allowed ANYWHERE in city limits. And a reminder that fireworks use outside of those days is already prohibited. Instead, I hope you join us for Salt Lake City’s free America250 Drone Show on July 3 at Jordan Park and help us protect our neighborhoods while celebrating safely together.

  • The first 1,500 people will receive $15 vouchers to use at on-site food trucks
  • Live music and more drones–500 total

Fire Safety Tips

  • Report non-emergency illegal use of fireworks by calling 801-799-3000.
  • Refresh your memory on fire prevention tips at UtahFireSense.org—for example, don’t park on dry grass, replace your old tires, and prevent sparks when doing lawn work.
  • If your home or business is in the Wildland Urban Interface or surrounded by grasslands, sign up for a free defensible space assessment.

A Balanced FY27 Budget

This was a tough budget year where we focused on delivering core services. I appreciate the City Council’s diligence to adopt a balanced FY2027 budget that prioritizes the highest public needs and reflects our community values. My administration will continue to pursue additional, diversified revenue streams in the coming year to reduce burdens directly carried by our residents.

What’s Next
Because the FY27 budget includes a proposed increase to the City’s portion of property tax, the process will also include a Truth in Taxation hearing on August 11. As part of the annual budget, the City Council will also review proposed Capital Improvement Program funding requests and allocate those by September 1.
