South Temple Sewer Upsizing Project

The Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (SLCDPU) is upsizing a sewer main along the north side of South Temple Street, from approximately I Street to L Street and from M Street to Virginia Street.

The existing sewer main is not expected to accommodate projected increases in flow due to growth. Upsizing the sewer main is necessary to ensure proper function for future demands

Schedule

Construction is anticipated to begin as early as March 31, 2025, and be completed by October 2025. Work will occur in segments, starting near I Street and progressing east. The segment from I Street to L Street will be under construction throughout April and May 2025.

Construction Impacts

  • Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with occasional night or weekend work as needed.
  • Closure of the westbound shoulder with possible lane closures and lane shifting. Some side streets will also be closed to accommodate work.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle route detours.
  • Sewer bypass pumping will be in place.
  • Sewer lateral clean outs will be installed on some properties, and lateral connections will be reconnected to the sewer main.
  • Temporary driveway access interruptions and sidewalk closures. Residents and businesses will be notified 48-72 hours prior to any driveway access interruptions.
  • Tree protection fencing and strategic excavation methods will be in place to minimize impact to the trees in the parkstrip.
  • Increased noise, vibrations, dust, and truck traffic.

Phase 1 Project Update:

Phase I construction between I Street and L Street is anticipated to begin as early as March 31, 2025 and be completed by late May 2025. To accommodate future flows, the sewer main must be upsized. The contractor will use an innovative trenchless method to rehabilitate the pipe, minimizing disruption to the area. Crews will access the sewer main at manholes, pulling equipment through to burst the old pipe while simultaneously installing a new one. This technique also reduces the need for sewer service interruptions by using an above-ground temporary bypass pipe. Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with occasional night or weekend work as needed.
