Full Project Scope

This project examines the historic Fisher Mansion and conducts a visioning effort to reimagine the mansion as a publicly accessible space that provides the opportunity for recreation and education on the Jordan River. The mansion was recently funded for stabilization which will begin as early as 2023. This is a key first step before further renovation work can begin. The visioning project will guide the future of the mansion as well as the entire Fisher Mansion site, including the grounds, Carriage House, and boat ramp. This project will involve significant public engagement as well as key partnership development to support the final vision for the site.

What’s New

Stabilization Funding

On August 16th 2022, City Council approved $3 million for stabilization and improvements of the Fisher Mansion. Public Lands will be working with Public Services over the next few years on the stabilization of the mansion which will prevent future losses and damage. Following completion of stabilization, Public Lands will explore renovations of the mansion for its final uses.

Boat Ramp Fish

The Salt Lake City Public Art Program has worked with internationally renowned artist Colette Hosmer on public art installations for Salt Lake City’s four boat ramps along the Jordan River. One of the sites is directly adjacent to the Fisher Mansion, which will receive several 8-foot tall trout. These boat ramps are a huge amenity that supports recreation on the river, and the art installations will provide welcome placemaking and wayfinding along the river.

Background

The Fisher Mansion is a historic site located on 200 South, adjacent to the Jordan River. The City has funded multiple projects that work to rehabilitate and activate this site, including a new canoe and kayak ramp constructed in 2020, seismic upgrades and stabilization of the Fisher Carriage House, and the complete renovation of the Carriage House, currently under construction. Learn more about that project here.

In March 2022, the Fisher Mansion made news after the iconic bronze fencing was stolen. The remaining portions of the fence have since been removed for safe keeping.

The Fisher Mansion is specifically identified in the Public Lands Master Plan as a site for preservation and future public use. This project supports two Transformative Projects from the Master Plan: Revive Our River and Sustaining Our Stories. This complex holds immense potential for a unique public place while also activating a valuable resource in the Jordan River.
