Why indoor air quality?

Air quality is a major public health concern, and we want to provide Salt Lakers with the education and resources to keep their indoor air healthy even on bad air days.

The good news is there are easy ways to keep the air in our homes clean. You can improve your indoor air by using a higher efficiency furnace filter, a portable air purifier, or just by changing some of your habits around cooking. We have funding to help a limited number of households make these changes, and information and tips to help anyone!

Who the Program is For:

We want to prioritize helping community members who are the most affected by poor indoor air quality.  This includes:

  • Households with people particularly sensitive to poor air quality such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, or people with a breathing or heart condition.
  • Households who are exposed to more air pollution (e.g. their home is within one block of a source of air pollution like a major road way or polluting industry)

Note: As part of the program, you will receive regular educational reminders and follow-up communications throughout 2025. These updates will provide information to help you make the most of your new indoor air quality equipment and support your ongoing experience with it.

Available Equipment

Due to limited funding, you can request a set of HVAC filters with either an air purifier or an induction cooktop, but not both.

High-Efficiency Air Filters

Apply to get a set of three MERV 11 HVAC filters and set a baseline for clean air in your home.  Various sizes available. See product details here.

Using a high-efficiency furnace filter and replacing it regularly is one of the most effective ways to improve your indoor air quality.

Air Purifier

Apply to get an air purifier to clear out particulate your furnace can’t.

Air purifiers help remove airborne particles like dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke in the home. This is a great option for anyone who has asthma or allergies.

Induction Cooktop

We’re offering a single-burner induction cooktop as a cleaner cooking alternative for those who have gas ranges.

Keep in mind, induction cooking can take some trial and error to get used to. Only magnetic cookware will work with the unit, and the burner will heat up faster – so start low, go slow!

How to Participate

To participate in the Clean Air SLC Indoor Air Quality Program, follow these steps:

If you live in Salt Lake City and are over 18 years old, you can apply! Keep in mind, we may prioritize households with children or older adults, individuals with breathing or heart problems and those that live near pollution sources.

To show that you live in Salt Lake City, you will need to upload one of the following documents:

  • Utility Bill
  • Bank Statement
  • Mortgage statement
  • Major credit card bill

The document must be dated after January 1, 2025. Only one application per household is allowed, and the name and address on the document must match the name and home address on your application. Note: You may designate a separate shipping address in the application

Here are examples of documents we would accept, and documents we do not accept.

The application for this program is hosted through the MySLCgov funding website linked below. Please read through the rest of the participation instructions before applying.

Note: In the application you will need to share your household address and a shipping address (if different), and answer questions about health concerns, household details and select the equipment you’re interested in.

We will review applications as they come in. We will contact you within 2 weeks to let you know if you’ve been selected. If you don’t hear from us, please email us at cleanairslc@slc.gov.

If you are selected, you will need to respond to a survey before we send you your equipment. We will ask questions to help us better understand your concerns about air quality, and current situation.

The equipment you were selected to receive will be sent to the shipping address you provide on your application. You’ll get an email with the shipping details when the order is placed.

As part of the program, you will receive educational reminders and follow-ups about your experience with your new indoor air quality equipment throughout 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will applicants be selected?

We want to help those who are most affected by poor indoor air quality. We are looking to prioritize applicants who:

  • Have a member of their household who is sensitive to poor air quality such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, or anyone with a breathing or heart condition.
  • Live close to a source of air pollution like a major road, refinery or auto shop.

How much funding is available?

The program has limited funding. We will provide equipment on a first-come, first-served basis while prioritizing high-need households. The total funding amount and type of equipment selected will determine how many households can receive equipment.

Can I apply for multiple types of equipment?

You can request a set of HVAC filters with either an air purifier or an induction cooktop, but not both.

If I'm selected do I have to pay anything for the equipment?

No, the equipment is completely free through the Clean Air SLC program. But, you must agree to respond to follow-up surveys in order to get the equipment.

How will I know if I am selected?

You will get an email if you are selected to receive equipment. If you don’t hear from us in 2 weeks, please email cleanairslc@slc.gov to check your application status.

How will the personal information I provide be protected?

Your personal information will only be used by the Clean Air SLC team. We take data security seriously and care about your privacy. Your application and survey responses will be stored in secure systems and accessible only to program administrators.  While we may share general themes from our surveys with the public, your individual answers and personal information will stay private. We will delete your personal information and survey responses within six months of the program’s completion, including reporting and other close-out activities.

Can I apply for someone else?

Yes, you may help someone fill out their application, but the proof of address must match where they live.

Why does the application ask for a shipping address?

We will ship equipment directly to program participants. If you are worried about the safety of a package being delivered to your home, you can choose a different address for us to ship to. The shipping address may be outside Salt Lake City boundaries, but please note that you will still be required to provide documentation proving that your primary address is within Salt Lake City.

What happens if I don't receive my package or if my package is damaged during shipping??

We are not responsible for missing or stolen packages. If your equipment is damaged during shipping, please contact us immediately at cleanairslc@slc.gov

What if I move outside of SLC after receiving the equipment?

If you move out of Salt Lake City after receiving the equipment, you need to tell the program team. Depending on the situation, you might need to return the equipment.
