BST West City Creek Access Repaired with Rock Steps

The lowest 200 feet of BST West City Creek just above the trailhead has a new major trail tread repair. For decades, storm and spring water that had accumulated along the upper slopes has drained into the trail corridor, creating a runoff channel. SLC Public Lands contracted with American Conservation Experience (ACE), an experienced, national youth conservation corps with a local Utah chapter, to hand-build 20+ rock steps along this section to disperse water and eliminate trail erosion that runs into Bonneville Boulevard. Bikes may use the alternate access trail that connects with Bonneville Boulevard 100 yards further south. A project summary was provided by ACE as well.

BEFORE:

Engineers, trail designers, and hydrology specialists on site.
Seasonal mud floes and trail damage.
Water runoff draining from trail.

AFTER:

Rocky Mountain Power Wildfire Mitigation Project

Phase II (North Virginia & 11th Avenue to Dry Creek) of the RMP Wildfire Mitigation Project began on July 12. Trail closures occurred in South Popperton (bike loop and walking trail) as well as on the Popperton – Dry Creek Connector Trail at various times in July and August. The utilities replacement work has been completed as of the week of August 21. A final walkthrough with the electrical contractor and trail and land restoration contractor and the City is scheduled for August 31 to implement the restoration plan.
