Residents who currently have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday pickup days will be assigned a new one, while those with Thursday as a pickup day will remain Thursday.

  • This new collection schedule will allow City staff to better adapt and respond to disruptions due to weather, holidays, and other events throughout the week, ensuring that City residents continue to receive reliable and consistent service.
  • The schedule change does not affect: Apartment buildings w/ private dumpsters; Businesses w/ private dumpsters; those in the Thursday zone; or Call-2-Haul availability +/or pick-up
  • Residents who participate in optional curbside glass recycling services may be assigned a new pickup day by service provider Momentum Glass Recycling via an email or text notification.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Who is this service change going to impact?

80% of Salt Lake City residents who use garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection services through the Salt Lake City Waste & Recycling Division will see a change in their collection day.

What change is happening?

The collection day change is as follows:

  • Monday area collection will now be Tuesday
  • Tuesday area collection will now be Monday
  • Wednesday area collection will now be Friday
  • Thursday – NO CHANGE
  • Friday area collection will now be Wednesday

Where in the Salt Lake City is this happening?

See the interactive map above to find the exact changes to the pick up schedule for the 5 zones within Salt Lake City.

Why is this change happening?

To maximize efficiency and minimize service disruptions. For many years, the heaviest workload on the City’s pickup routes has fallen on Mondays and Fridays, with a more manageable workload occurring mid-week. This is due to a variety of factors, including volume of material collected, geography, average number of containers set out each day, and availability of equipment and staffing. Shifting the heaviest workload to the middle of the week will ensure City residents receive the most reliable and consistent service.

What do I do if my recycling or garbage wasn’t picked up?

During the first weeks after the change day, Waste and Recycling crews will make every effort to circle back to dump garbage or recycling containers that were missed due to confusion about your new pick up day. Reminder notices will also be placed on containers. If you are unsure about your day you can check the interactive map above or contact 801-535-6999 or slcwasteandrecycling@slc.gov.

Will my containers be picked up on a holiday?

Weekly curbside garbage, recycling, and compost collection are provided on all holidays in Salt Lake City EXCEPT:

  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day, December 25
  • New Year’s Day, January 1

Collection will be delayed by one day following the holidays listed above, for the remainder of that week. The collection schedule will not be affected by holidays that fall on a weekend.

Garbage and recycling collection occurs on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when those days fall on non-weekends.

What about winter suspension for brown cans?

Brown curbside yard waste cans will not be collected from January 20 – February 28, 2025 in order to save fuel costs and reduce emissions. Collection resumes the week of March 3, 2025 – weather permitting.
