To graduate, participants must attend all 9 in-person sessions (29.5 hours): a 90-minute Kick Off and all 8 Leadership Success 2025 courses (3.5 hours each). All required work must be completed within the calendar year to receive certification.

To enroll, submit a Leadership Success Enrollment Application Request on Workday.

Requests go to your manager and then Employee University for approval. You will receive a notification in Workday of your final enrollment request status. Once your Leadership Success Enrollment Application is approved, you will receive an email from EU@slc.gov with instructions on how to register for the Leadership Success 2025 Kickoff.

Overview and Sign Up
Get acquainted with the curriculum and discover how each course aligns with the goals of Leadership Success 2025. Bring your laptop to enroll in classes that best fit your schedule and start the journey toward leveling up your leadership skills!


Course 1 –
 
Supervisor Standards & Responsibilities
This course offers an overview of Salt Lake City’s organizational structure and the Mayor’s key focus areas. It provides foundational knowledge on supervisor responsibilities, covering essential policies and agreements. Topics include:
  • Employment policies and procedures
  • Core functions of a supervisor
  • Salt Lake City’s Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)


Course 2 –
 
SLC Business Processes
Explore how the City’s technology, finance, and compensation policies impact every employee. Bring your questions as leaders from IMS, Finance, and Compensation share essential insights to help you navigate:
  • Technology tools and approved enterprise applications
  • Communication strategies and branding standards
  • AI, cybersecurity, and the Utah State Data Privacy Act
  • The City’s budgeting process
  • Finance Department resources
  • SLC’s compensation philosophy and procedural guidelines


Course 3 –
 
EQ & Difficult Conversations  
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a valuable skill that can enhance personal and professional relationships and improve workplace dynamics. In this course, you will develop skills to increase self-awareness, manage your responses, and defuse emotional reactions in others. Learn how to handle challenging conversations with a simple, four-step approach to REAL Talk that encourages respectful, candid, and productive dialogue. These techniques will improve collaboration, resolve conflicts, and build a more engaged team environment.


Course 4 –
 
Legal Compliance 
As a supervisor, you are directly responsible for ensuring compliance with employment laws. This course equips you with the essential knowledge to uphold these standards, covering key legal topics such as:
  • Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
  • Anti-discrimination and harassment prevention
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)


Course 5 –
 
Equality, Access & Belonging 
This course begins with an overview of the evolving workforce. Then, explore your personal leadership style to learn how to connect with your team members more effectively, recognizing and valuing each individual’s unique contributions.

Human beings are different, and these differences represent the unlimited scope of human potential and possibility.  Every day we bring our assumptions, beliefs, values, ideas, ideals and our abilities to work.


Course 6 –
 
Employee Relations 
Equip yourself with strategies to manage challenging behaviors and performance issues. This course provides guidance on handling disciplinary processes and working effectively with your HR Business Partner (HRBP). Topics include:
  • Addressing performance issues
  • Coaching and counseling techniques
  • Delivering constructive written warnings
  • Managing disciplinary actions


Course 7 –
 
Record Management & Change Management 
First, learn the fundamentals of record management, including:
  • Definition of a record
  • Value of good record keeping
  • Importance of both retention and destruction
  • Tools and resources available to support the process
Next, build essential skills for guiding teams through change with Change Management. In today’s rapidly evolving world, these skills are critical. Topics include:
  • Principles of effective Change Management
  • Real examples of Salt Lake City’s use of Change Management
  • Support resources from the Change Management Team
  • Practical applications of Change Management in your role



Course 8 –
 
Effective Team Leadership
Explore the distinctions between managing and leading; learn how to cultivate high-performing teams that adapt to change, trust each other, and remain engaged. Topics covered include:
  • Leadership styles and effects
  • Building autonomy, job performance, and satisfaction
  • Core elements of effective teams
  • Empowering and recognizing team skills
  • Transitioning from buddy to boss
  • Applying situational leadership techniques
