Arlington Hills Pump Station Back-Up Power Project

Design of the Arlington Hills Pump Station Back-Up Power Project is scheduled to begin Fall 2023

BACKGROUND AND NEED

The purpose of the project is to replace the existing emergency generator at the pump station at 1225 Chandler Drive. The new generator will ensure continued operation of the water distribution pump station that provides drinking water to the neighborhood. In the event of a power outage, the backup generator will ensure that water service is not interrupted.

PUBLIC OUTREACH

The contractor installing the generator will work with SLCDPU staff in notifying and coordinating with nearby residents during the life of the project. SLCDPU’s Project Manager is Courtney Hamer. Her contact information is listed at the bottom of this page.

CONSTRUCTION IMPACTS

All design and construction work will take place on the pump station property. Residents may see an increase in construction truck traffic and some noise disturbance due to construction activity. All work will occur Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Before construction activities begin, notification will be coordinated through the contractor with each resident nearby. The information in the notice will include the anticipated timing of construction and any other impacts of the project.

ROAD CLOSURES AND DETOURS

The contractor is not expected to work in any open traffic areas. Placement of the new generator will require a crane that may require a short closure of the roadway directly in front of the pump station. Traffic will be temporarily routed around this area, if necessary.

Residents are asked to avoid parking vehicles within the road right-of-way at the project site while construction is occurring. This will protect personal property, minimize impacts, and expedite work.

SAFETY

Safety is a top priority for SLCDPU. We encourage and appreciate everyone’s efforts to keep pedestrians, children, crew members, and vehicles away from the construction equipment and work areas. Parents: please talk with your children about staying away from potentially dangerous construction and staging areas. If you see any vandalism or trespassing in construction areas, please call SLCDPU 24-hour emergency dispatch (P: 801-483-6700) at any hour to report the incident.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:  How will I be notified about construction beginning in my neighborhood?

A:  Prior to beginning work, the contractor is required to hand deliver a written Construction Status Update Notice to all residents, businesses, schools, and property owners adjacent to, and affected by, the work. The Contractor will be prepared to explain the planned work schedule, anticipated closures, notifications, emergency contact numbers, and respond to questions.

Q:  Will my water service be shut off?

A:  The water distribution system has redundancy in this area that will likely prevent any service interruptions as a result of this construction. The pump station will require an electrical shutdown but is not expected to involve any water shut-offs.

Q:  How loud will the generator be?

A:  The new generator project will be designed by a licensed engineer. The generator project will be designed to meet Salt Lake County’s ordinance for noise control. Ordinance requires that sound be less than 5 dBA above ambient sound and not to exceed 50 dB, when measured at the property line between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. Ordinance requires that sound be less than 10 dBA above ambient sound and not to exceed 60 dB, when measured at the property line between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. For reference, 60 dB is comparable to conversational speech.

Q:  How often will the generator run?

A:  To guarantee the performance of the generator, testing will occur weekly. Testing will require the generator to be run for 30 – 60 minutes each week, but in certain cases could require the generator to run up to 12 hours. Routine testing will be limited to daytime hours. The generator will only run at night in an emergency situation. This emergency generator will ensure that the neighborhood has water service during a power outage.
