Campfires banned in City Creek Canyon

A campfire ban is in place for all picnic sites in City Creek Canyon. The prohibition is effective immediately and will continue until further notice. Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (SLCDPU) and Salt Lake City Fire Department (SLCFD) are cooperating in this effort, as scorching temperatures and dry conditions have greatly increased wildfire risk in City Creek (managed as watershed by SLCDPU).

“Our concerns with these hot and dry conditions are for City Creek Canyon’s proximity to urban development and to protect our critical water infrastructure, including our water treatment plant three miles up the canyon” said SLCDPU Director Laura Briefer.

Propane-fueled grills are permitted under the ban. As always, no burning is allowed anywhere in the canyon except for the designated 30 picnic sites.

SLCFD has also prohibited fireworks from specific areas in mind of the state July 24th Pioneer Day holiday.
